More on the Captain Dallas Approved Fish Cleaning Table

In between naps, solving all the world's problems and playing lumber jack, I have been fiddling with the fish cleaning table.  The new cypress base stand has been tested and photographed by a real semi-professional photographer.  Unfortunately, the semi-professional photographer and I were not able to get some scantily clad young lovely to pose with the table.  At least my fat butt is not in these photos which may help sales.

This is what the Cypress Kit will look like when you get one.  It will be packaged of course and include  fasteners for assembly.  With the pre-drilled holes for fasteners it goes together very easily.  Here is another view.

I am pretty proud with how it came out.  Good looking, easy to assemble and pre-stained to last a long time, estimated 20 plus years.  While the design is simple, it is rock solid.  I am a wood fan but many prefer stainless or aluminum.  Those are next on the agenda along with the mother of all custom bases.

Table at the Tackle Box

Despite feeling like death warmed over thanks to this cold, I managed to get the fish cleaning table with the new cypress base up to the Tackle Box to get some feedback.  As soon as I feel better I will get started on the more deluxe model base.  The deluxe will be fully enclosed with doors on the front.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and give me your opinion.

Cypress Fish Cleaning Table Base

I have a cold which is really cramping my style.  I did manage to get a buddy to help me put together a new base for the fish cleaning table.  I am into wood and low maintenance, so I ordered some cypress from central Florida.  Cypress has natural oils that protect it from insects and rot to a point.  Second growth cypress will weather well, but it does need a little UV and water protection to  extend its useful life.

In the pictures are the table with the basic base.  The base is natural and looks good, but I think a light stain would bring out the grain.  Cost for the base right now is $150 bringing the total base and table to $549 Dollars.  Bases right now are only available in the Florida Keys since shipping costs have to be worked out.  The base design is meant to be flexible allowing doors, drawers etc. to be added for custom applications.

Fishing and the Filet Pro

Jeff Knapp gave me a good tarpon report yesterday. He went two for seven. Mainly small fish around 30 pounds but they had a shot at a big girl. Bay side the Spanish Mackerel bite is getting better every day, Ron limited out in a couple hours. The snapper are still chewing strong with the usual suspects. Sailfish is fairly steady but not on fire. Still two or three shots a day with kings, mahi and tuna throw in is not a bad time.

The capt. Dallas inspired Fillet Pro fish cleaning table is making its debut at the Miami Boat Show this week. I'll be interested in seeing the reaction over the new fish cleaning table.

The Table is Nearly Ready!

Before I head out to do a little Yellowtail fishing with Chicago Joe I thought I would post the latest on the fish cleaning table. It looks good for production beginning the first of the year. The one in the photo is set up at the Seven Mile Marina for testing and display. I am pretty excited about this new product and all the captains that have seen it have nothing but good things to say about it.

More Fish Cleaning Table Stuff

Just to show you guys that I do more than fish here is the basic Conch Concepts fish cleaning table base. It is made of pressure treated 2x4 and 1x6. Some people were concerned that 2x4 was not sturdy enough for building the table base. This sucker is solid. The secret is the 1x6 frame under the table top. This is glued and screwed into the 2x4 legs to prevent racking. Also the bottom 2x4 frame is cut to get the maximum bite into the legs. The materials for the pressure treated base cost less than 25 bucks for you do it yourselfers if you spend the time digging for straight lumber at the Home Depot.

Our plans are to include the drawings for the basic base with the top which will retail for $399. We also are working on a powder coated square aluminum base, round pipe stainless or aluminum base, the two leg bent aluminum light travel base and of course the ultimate Tiki cleaning station.

My next project is to enclose the basic pressure treated base to add two drawers for knives, baggies etc, and two doors for storage under the table. The basic pressure treated base won't blow wind up many skirts, but enclosed with some nice cedar or other material it will look hot. Once that design is complete we should have a product sexy enough to impress any fisherman.

Fishing wise it was a good day for the few boats that were booked. The only down side was that sailfish were slow today.

Palermo? No Problem.

The season has not started in earnest, though a few captains are getting out. Hurricane Palermo is south of Cuba and should not pose a threat to the Keys. The fishing reports I have been getting are pretty good. Sailfish are showing up on the reef with two boats reporting sailfish while fishing for yellow tails. Along with the sailfish are good number of Cero Mackerel and a few nice size king mackerel.

Cobia have been spotted cruising the tide line in Hawks channel. Nice size fish from twenty to fifty pounds. You have to be a little lucky to spot them. The grouper and big mangrove snapper bite has been a bit slow. Mutton snapper are helping fill that void which is nice. Bayside reports are a little inconsistent. The Spanish mackerel are moving in, but they don't want to eat every trip. The next cold front should fire them up. So get ready to make tons of fish dip and fish cakes. The fish cleaning table is getting close. We had a shipping error so a few are wandering around the Midwest. Once we get a few more delivered we will start the testing program. The tiki drawing are approved for Monroe County. So I will be spending some time selling tikis and tables. I will try to keep fishing open three or four days a week. This is going to make my schedule pretty weird so book in advance if you can.

After Fay and Other Stuff

Tropical Storm Fay came through a few days ago so no fishing reports. The yellowtail bite on the reef should be hot as a firecracker for the next few days though. Fay didn't do much damage. We never lost power and the cable only blinked off for a few minutes. After taking care of the boats it was great napping weather.

Tourist are starting to trickle in now. With Fay stalled over Daytona it may take a while before the North Florida regulars can get away for a Keys fishing trip. You South Florida folks may want to wade out to your car and come on down for some fishing.

As mentioned in the earlier post the fish cleaning table is coming along nicely. We will be looking for a few volunteers to help test the table pretty soon. What we are looking for is a few crafty kind of folks that can build base stands or cabinets for the top. Then send us some nice pictures and hopefully good reviews of the table. We can still make a few tweaks to the design if need be based on the feedback. The table will probably be free for the volunteers though we may have to charge for shipping.

We will also be looking for distributors in various locations around the world. Anyone wanting to sell the tops keep checking back and I will give out the web address for the marketing director when we are ready to go.

Fish Cleaning Table

I apologize for the lack of posts recently. I have have been fishing some but mainly trying to work on the fish cleaning table and a few other projects. A couple of days ago I finally got one of the hopefully last prototypes. This one is made out of the real deal HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), the same thing Starboard(TM) is made of. The molding process proved to be a bit of a challenge using HDPE. The end result of the struggle looks like it was worth the effort.

The Fish Cleaning Table

Finally, the first fish cleaning table is out of the mold. The table is five feet long and 30 inches deep. It can be mounted in a variety of ways including under a custom tiki hut.
